差利•卓別靈
電影史上第一位國際巨星，差利•卓別靈爵士，KBE(1889-1977)在倫敦出生，自幼在劇場打滾，表演生涯長達七十年。1910年，21歲的差利來到美國，在美國巡迴表演期間，被基斯東片廠發掘，於1914年初登銀幕。他以流浪漢形象迅速走紅，並很快身兼編、導、演，以至製片、配樂，全面掌控創作的各方面。1919年，差利和格里菲斯、瑪麗•璧馥和道格拉斯•菲濱氏四位早期電影重量級人物組成了聯美影業公司，保持獨立製作人的自主權，以抗衡勢力日益膨脹的荷李活大公司。他以爐火純青的喜劇感和電影技巧，把浪漫愛情、社會、政治批判種種元素結合，拍出了《淘金記》(1925)、《城市之光》(1931)、《摩登時代》(1936)、《大獨裁者》(1940)等不朽經典，編、導、演以至配樂皆能的差利，可能是默片時代最成功的電影人。

巴士達•基頓
1895年出身於雜技表演家庭，三歲開始和父母登台演出，冷面笑匠巴士達•基頓自幼與危險動作為伴，練就了一副驚人的身手。他被「肥佬」艾賓高發掘入電影行，先是做他的拍擋，然後自立門戶，在1920至1928年間，自編自導自演，獨立拍攝了三十部長短喜劇，其中《小福爾摩斯》(1924)、《待客之道》(1923)及《將軍號火車》(1926)等，都成為了影史上的經典。基頓的電影不重人物感情，而是以驚人的奇觀及特別的影像來製造喜劇效果，他往往要親身上陣，冒著生命危險演出特技動作，和巨大的機械，如火車、汽船，或是自然現象，如旋風、洪水對抗，在銀幕上創造震撼的效果。他令人目瞪口呆的動作場面，與石磈般冰冷、不動如山的面部表情配合，讓人忍俊不禁外，更使他擠身最偉大的特技演員之列。

神經六（夏勞•哀）
夏勞•哀，又名「神經六」，與差利和基頓並列三大笑匠的默片演員。生於1893年，自幼參與劇場演出，於1913年開始拍電影，至1947年總共演出超過二百部電影。在銀幕上他以戴眼鏡的鄰家男孩形象示人，近於日常生活的角色使他表演的危險動作更讓人捏汗。他的代表作包括《平安是福》(1923)、《新鮮人》(1925)、《小兄弟》(1927)。



Charles Chaplin
Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin, KBE (1889-1977), the first ever international star in the history of film, was born in London. Starting early in the entertainment world, Chaplin had a working life that spanned over 70 years. In 1910, the 21-year-old Chaplin went to the United States where he toured with a drama troupe and his talent was soon discovered by Keystone Film Company. After making his first film appearance in 1914, Chaplin gained fame rapidly with his image of a tramp. In a short time, he assumed the roles of scriptwriter, director, actor, producer and composer, mastering all areas of filmmaking. In 1919, together with D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, the heavyweights in the early cinematic age, Chaplin formed United Artists in order to maintain the autonomy of independent filmmakers and to contend with the Hollywood studios which were growing bigger and bigger. With his acmic sense of humour and cinematic skills, he combined romantic love as well as social and political criticisms to make immortal classics such as The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), Modern Times (1936) and The Great Dictator (1940). Proficient at scriptwriting, directing, acting and even composing, Charles Chaplin might very well be the most successful filmmaker in the silent film era.

Buster Keaton
Born into a vaudeville family in 1895, Buster Keaton began performing with his parents at the age of three. Nicknamed "The Great Stone Face", the comedian had been doing dangerous feats since childhood and built up consummate acrobatic skills. He was introduced into the film industry when Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle discovered his talent. After partnering with Arbuckle for some time, Keaton turned independent and wrote for, directed and acted in his own films from 1920 to 1928. He made 30 short and feature-length comedies during this period, Sherlock Jr. (1924), Our Hospitality (1923) and The General (1926) were some of the classics. Keaton's films are not renowned for the depiction of emotions, but are spectaculars of stunts and special images with comic effects. In order to create astounding effect on the screen, he performed most of the feats in person and risked his life to fight enormous machines such as train or steamboat, or natural phenomena such as tornado or flood. The awe-inspiring action scenes, coupled with his stoic, deadpan expression, were hilarious and made him one of the greatest stuntsters in history.

Harold Lloyd
Harold Lloyd ranks alongside Charles Chaplin and Buster Keaton as one of the most popular and influential comedians of the silent film era. Born in 1893, Lloyd started early in acting when he was a child. He entered the film industry in 1913, and had made over 200 movies until 1947. On the silver screen, he was always a neighbourhood boy wearing glasses. Such an image of an ordinary person made the daredevil physical feats he performed even more hair-raising. Some of his representative works are Safety Last! (1923), The Freshman (1925) and The Kid Brother (1927).

差利演的流浪漢生活潦倒，露宿渡日，還不時被人欺壓。他同病相憐地救回小狗，又愛上舞廳的小歌女，只可惜自身難保愛莫能助。幸得機靈小狗找到一筆横財，更幫忙擊退壞人，讓流浪漢和小歌女過上幸福的田園生活。差利為第一國家電影公司拍的第一部作品。除了和狗合作外，這也是差利除編、導、演、製之外，還兼任配樂的作品。
A kindhearted down-and-out tramp saves a poor puppy out of compassion, but can't help his beloved sing-song girl. However, the puppy pays him back by discovering a fortune and helps him to fend off his tormentors. Chaplin's first work with First National Pictures and he also composed the music for the film.

In the trench, Chaplin has experienced hunger, flooding, bombs, gas and all the unimaginable hardships. But he bumped his way behind enemy lines, captures the enemy's commander and wins the heart of the French country girl. This war effort for the Allies became Chaplin's most successful work at that time.

Chaplin lives on a dream farm where the hens lay eggs straight on to the pans, and the milk is pumped right on to the table from the cows. This blissful farm is disrupted when a city slicker arrives. Chaplin not only showcased his trademark mime but also put on a show with the farm animals.

Chaplin is no longer the tramp but the head of a household, taking his family of four out on vacation. It gets to a flying start with the car breaking down, everyone getting seasick, ending with an entanglement with the traffic cop. This film was made during the production overruns of The Kid. As for all of Chaplin's shorts, the story is not the main thing, it is how he plays out the comedy with his miming act.

差利與小孩 (港譯: 尋子遇仙記) The Kid

未婚媽媽忍痛拋棄初生嬰兒，陰差陽錯被流浪漢差利撿到。五年後，小孩與流浪漢相依為命，成為幫他睇水、搞破壞賺錢的小助手。小孩被人發現是孤兒，要把他送去孤兒院。流浪漢避過警察的追捕，把小孩搶回。這時小孩的生母已是有名的明星，她發現兒子的下落，出重賞要找回小孩。差利的第一部長片，上映時是全年票房亞軍。這部片的製作過程與差利婚變同步，而片中演小角色夢中仙女的演員麗塔•格蕾則在三年後成為差利的第二任妻子。演小孩的積奇•古根後來成為默片年代的知名童星，60年代更飾演大受歡迎美國片集《愛登士家庭》中的肥達叔叔。
A child born out of wedlock is picked up by the good-natured tramp; five years on, the kid has become the tramp's partner in crime, keeping a watchful eye while the tramp goes on his vandalizing acts all for making a dime. When the kid is found out to be an orphan, the authorities want to force his internment into the orphanage. But Chaplin puts on a daring rescue to get back the kid. The kid's birth mother has become a movie star and wants to give a reward to get back her child. This Chaplin's first feature became the runner-up at the box-office for the year. While the kid Jackie Coogan became a well-known child star of the Silent Era, Lita Grey who played a fairy in the dream sequence became Chaplin's second wife.

差利一人分飾兩角，流浪漢和有錢人。有錢人因為沉迷酒精，正和妻子冷戰中，一個人住在渡假勝地的酒店中。流浪漢來到溫暖的渡假勝地，闖進酒店的化裝舞會，被有錢人的太太誤認做丈夫，引來憤怒的丈夫追打。顧名思義，這是一部對富人諸多諷剌的作品，這種強烈的貧富對比，會是之後差利長片中反覆出現的母題。
Chaplin plays both a prince and a pauper; as an alcoholic rich man who is locked in silent quarrel with his wife, now spending his days alone at a resort hotel; also as a tramp who stumbles by accident into the hotel's masquerade ball. The rich man's wife has mistaken the tramp to be her husband, leading to an outrage by the jealous rich husband. Chaplin's satire on the rich and the contrast between the rich and the poor continued to be a recurring theme in Chaplin's films.

In Chaplin's last film with First National Pictures as distributor, he played a fugitive from the prison; he stole a pastor's outfit and steals his passage on a running train. The train takes him to a Puritan community and he is mistaken to be the new pastor. He starts to "preach" and slowly gains popularity among the locals while falling in love with the landlord's daughter. But his brothers from the prison have caught up with him and want Chaplin to help them with their secret agenda.

In pursuit of the dream of gold, the tramp has followed the gold rush to Alaska, stuck in a hut in the snowstorm. Fate brings him together with a fugitive and a pioneer who has struck gold. After a fight, the tramp has lost contact with the other two and continues on with his journey. He arrives at a town and falls for the dance hall girl; the pioneer is also there. But unfortunately he has lost his memory and cannot remember where the gold mine is. Chaplin and Fairbanks had founded United Artists to maintain independence in filmmaking in light of the big conglomerates. The Gold Rush was the Chaplin's second feature distributed by United Artists and also one of the biggest successes, with the fifth highest box-office gross of all silent movies. The scenes where Chaplin eats his boots and being mistaken as a turkey are all time classics.

大馬戲團 (又名: 沖出墮落城) The Circus

流浪漢因被警察誤認為扒手，逃進馬戲團的演出中，結果成為全場注目的笑點。他被馬戲團班主收留，更愛上了班主的女兒。可惜他卻沒法成為真正的小丑，也得不到心上人的愛。當馬戲團轉向下一個地點時，他選擇了獨自離開。被視為差利夫子自道的《大馬戲團》上映剛剛碰上了聲片時代的開始，拍攝期間亦受到各方面問題困擾，但票房反應不俗，在全部默片票房中排第七位。在首屆奧斯卡金像獎中，本片獲四項提名，包括最佳電影、最佳喜劇導演、最佳男主角和最佳劇本，但主辦單位最後把本片剔出競賽，只給了差利一個榮譽獎。於1991年被美國國會圖書館列入登記片目。
The tramp is wrongly accused by the police as a pickpocket. He runs into the circus to take shelter, and turns out to be the comic relief of the troupe. The circus owner wants to keep him while he has fallen in love with his daughter. As he cannot become a real clown, he chooses to stay behind when the circus moves on to the next town. Though this self-reflective piece was made at the dawning of the sound film era, it still maintained a decent box-office and was nominated for four awards in the first Oscar ceremony, including Best Picture, Director (comedy), Actor and Screenplay; only to be disqualified and substituted with an honorary award for Chaplin.

城市之光 City Lights

流浪漢先後遇上失明賣花女與失意富翁，他救回酒醉自殺的富翁，但富翁「報恩」卻時冷時熱。另一邊廂，為了幫賣花女復明，流浪漢千方百計去找財路。一連串鬧笑錯摸，對富裕階級充滿挖苦，連結起來變成一部浪漫感人的故事。1931年，美國電影已經是有聲片天下，但差利依然堅持無聲的喜劇，而觀眾的反應也證明他是對的，《城市之光》成為差利最叫好叫座的作品之一。在1952年首次《視與影》雜誌世界十大電影選舉名列第二位。於1991年被美國國會圖書館列入登記片目之中。
The tramp meets a blind flower-selling girl and saves a rich man who is about to commit suicide. He tries to earn money to pay for the blind girl's surgery, and it turns out to be a somber farce on the materialistic world of the rich. Though talkies were already dominating the scene in 1931, Chaplin's insistence in shooting a silent paid off as the film became the year's number two in box-office. Other honours include being second in Sight and Sound's first Top Ten List in 1952 and listed in the Library of Congress' registry in 1991.

摩登時代 Modern Times

流浪漢不再流浪，變成了生產線上的一粒螺絲釘。但生產線上的生活一點也不容易，手腳慢一點就鬧得笑話百出被開除。失業的流浪漢因為手拿紅旗走在示威工人前面，被視為共產黨投進獄中。原來獄中有食有住，讓他出了獄也想回去。幸有小孤女拉他一把，逃出監獄以及機械的世界。差利最初打算拍一部聲片，但最後《摩登時代》還是以配音默片示人，流浪漢依然沒有開口。除了最為人熟知的與機械齒輪博鬥的場面，這部電影還有大量罷工、示威的情節，差利毫不隱藏對工業文明和資本主義的懷疑和不滿。於1989年被美國國會圖書館列入登記片目。
The tramp has become a mere screw on the manufacturing line, but life continues to be hard. A slightly slow hand has got him fired, and a red handkerchief has got him into jail as a suspected left-wing unionist. Though he longs to return to jail where there is food, it takes a woman he loves to pull him out of the confinements of prison and machinery. Though intended to be a sound film, Modern Times was eventually made as a dubbed silent film. The film features the classic scene when Chaplin is struggling against the huge gears, and the many scenes of strikes and protests are Chaplin's silent protest against the industrial and capitalist society.

大獨裁者 The Great Dictator

差利第一次開口講對白，不再是永遠的流浪漢。他一人分飾兩角，既是小小的猶太理髮師，因為在戰場上受傷在醫院昏睡了二十年；也是權傾天下的大獨裁者，一心要把世界在股掌間玩弄。首次拍攝有聲片，差利對於聲音和對白已經有成熟的處理，通通都可作為笑料的來源。直接諷剌希特拉與納粹德國的電影，開拍時間與第二次世界大戰爆發幾乎同步。最初不受英美兩國政府歡迎，上映前途未卜，後來又因政治宣傳的價值而被力捧，大收旺場。於1997年被美國國會圖書館列入登記片目。
When Chaplin finally got to talk on screen, he did it in two parts; as a Jewish barber awakens from a 20-year coma due to war injuries, and as the Great Dictator. Chaplin already has a mastery of sound and music to turn them into part of the comic elements. A direct satire on Hitler, the film was made in synch with the outbreak of the Second World War. Mr. Verdoux is an unemployed bank clerk who has to feed his family. But he makes his fortune by targeting lonesome wealthy women, and feeds them a potion in a glass of wine. The film was based on true crime stories. Chaplin played a villain for the first time, but he still did it like a comic from the silent film. Chaplin and his co-writer Orson Welles were nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay, the only collaboration for these two screen legends from two different eras.

A clown of the past era saves a young dancer who attempts to commit suicide, and in turn reinitiates her into stardom. The girl has fallen for the clown and wants to marry him. But the clown decides to fade into the obscurity of street parlours. A semi-autobiographical film set in 1914, the year when Chaplin made his first film and set against the backdrop of theatre where he developed his comic acts. Keaton played his old partner for the symbolic performance of the last "Swan Song". The last film Chaplin shot in the US, which was cut short in its initial release due to his exile. It only premiered in Los Angeles 20 years later, bringing him an Oscar for Best Original Score, the only Oscar he won in a competition category.

Starts off with Keaton being chased by the police. He hops on the train for a getaway, only to be mistaken as a newly released murder ex-con. Just when he thinks he has met his dream girl, only to realize her father is the cop who chases him! It features Keaton's trademark shot with his favourite piece of large prop, the train!

基頓童心爆棚，愛玩大型玩具，《一星期》玩組合屋、《將軍號火車》就玩火車、在《小船》中顧名思義是玩艇，玩到最盡當然是反艇。話說基頓自製了一隻大船，準備一家大細遊船河，結果傾家蕩產，屋呀、車呀，都賠上了，還遇到狂雨暴風，船入滿水。三十多年後，基頓在訪問中提到，《小船》是他最喜歡的短片之一。
Keaton just loves toys; apart from the DIY house in One Week and the train in The General, this time is the boat. Keaton plans to build a boat for his family to cruise in, but it turns out to be the breaker of his fortune. Keaton has mentioned in an interview that The Boat was his favourite short film.

警匪追逐電影示範作，基頓拉著一車傢俬闖進警察的遊行隊伍中，陰差陽錯把炸彈拋向警察，結果被全城差人追捕。整個畫面被警察擠滿，場面壯觀，而基頓飛簷走壁，大展雜技身手，更拍案叫絕。有索隱派認為本片是基頓對老拍擋「肥佬」艾賓高被指控強姦殺人的回應。無論他拍片的動機是什麼，《差人》都是基頓最精巧、最標誌性的短片作品之一。於1997年被美國國會圖書館列入登記片目之中。
A showpiece in the cop-chase subgenre; Keaton crashes into an army of cops while accidentally hurling a bomb into them, him ending up being chased by all the cops in town. The striking sequence of a whole scene filled with cops is definitely a Keaton signature.

太陽底下無新事，追女仔不外兩三度板斧，無論是史前石器、羅馬帝國抑或「咆哮二十年代」，男人要懂耍手段，才能獵得美人歸。於是基頓一人分飾三角，在三個不同年代，跟猛男靚仔有財有勢之士拗手瓜。基頓的首部長片，據說有意戲仿格里菲斯大作《黨同伐異》，其實是電影公司以防萬一的設計。早期默片靠一兩個gag搞笑，短片比較易處理，一拖長，就未必煞食。基頓之前的兩部短片十分成功，但長片還是啼聲初試，萬一失敗，還可拆成三部短片上映。
Nothing is new under the sun; whether it is the Stone Age, the Roman Empire Era, or the Roaring Twenties, getting the girl is always the same tiresome business. Keaton plays three roles set in the above three different eras, beating some suave and powerful rivalries to try to get the girl. Some said the three-segment set-up in Keaton's first feature was inspired by Griffith's Intolerance, more likely it was a marketing ploy; in case the feature was a flop, they could still sell it as three shorts.

The success of Three Ages gave Keaton the confidence to do the next feature. A New Yorker is heading to the South to take care of some family business, only to realize that he is the target of vengeance of some previous generation's deeds. To complicate matters, he falls for the enemy's daughter on the train. This 19th century set railroad comedy is played out by Keaton's first wife Natalie Talmadge, who is also the boss Joseph Schenck's sister in law, Keaton's two sons are also in it, making it a true “family business”.

A true classic by Keaton, with smoothly choreographed action sequence that even Cocteau admired; the interaction between the narrative and outside the narrative was a pioneer in 20th century modernism. A projectionist dreams to be the great Sherlock Holmes. He falls asleep during the movie, becomes the detective in his dream, solves the crime and wins the girl. However, this classic was not well received in its days.

Keaton is often seen put to challenge by nature's forces, this time the ocean and huge machineries. Playing a rich kid on a 10,000 tonne ocean liner, his proposal to another rich girl is rejected, but they still go on to their Hawaiian honeymoon. After the ship has been sabotaged, it drifts afloat in the Pacific and these two people start to learn about caring for each other. Not only it features the largest of all Keaton's film's prop, an ocean liner, he can also be seen in his underwater suit that almost took his life!

Just when he thinks he's going to go bankrupt, Keaton's grandfather has left him an inheritance of $7 million, but he has to get married by 7pm on his 27th birthday. But there is one problem: he is already 27 today! Adapted from a stage play, and been put on the screen numerous times, but none could match the popularity of this version by Keaton. The finale chase scene where Keaton has to dodge the rolling stones from the hill has established him as a great stuntman. It also contains an early experiment with Technicolor when the opening credits and the scene were shot on colour.

基頓拿南北內戰做題材，似乎有意直追格里菲斯的史詩《國家的誕生》，更想力拚差利早一年完成的《淘金記》。火車司機參軍不成，給女友誤為懦夫，心灰意冷之時，火車還給敵軍偷走。大丈夫化悲憤為力量，使出超人本領，追火車，一直追入敵營，不但把火車追回，還把敵軍全部俘虜，重獲美人芳心。當年上映未得觀眾歡心，更因場面浩大，所費不菲，基頓的事業亦開始走下坡。本片至今仍被視為傑作，兩度位列《視與聽》雜誌的世界十大電影榜，與《大國民》等片並列殿堂級電影之列。
This Civil War comedy is setting its scale to Griffith's The Birth of A Nation, and trying to match Chaplin's The Gold Rush which was completed one year before. A train driver was not admitted to the force and his girlfriend mistakes him as a coward, even his train got stolen by the enemies. He decides to turn things round, recovers his train, captures the enemies and gets the girl back. The film was not well received and its huge budget caused a downturn in Keaton's career. But it is now considered to be a classic and has got into Sight & Sound's Top Ten List twice, in the league of Citizen Kane.

College graduate Bill Jr. is a spoiled kid, but his father aims to groom him to take over his small town steamboat company. The tough training not only turns him into a man but also wins the heart of the beauty. This last independent film by Keaton is considered another classic with The General, featuring the famous stunt when Keaton stood underneath a falling wall, only to be looped by the empty window frame. A scene re-enacted by Jackie Chan in Project A II.

A nutty country bumpkin came to the big city for a better living and landed with a sales clerk job at a department store. But his girlfriend thought he has made it already and proposes to get married. When the store offers a reward for attracting a crowd, his architect friend asks to climb up to the roof, what turns out was the greatest stunt in the silent movies with Lloyd hanging on the clock! A similar scene appears in Jackie Chan's Project A.
